Snowmobile Season

Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns reminds snowmobilers to register their snowmobiles locally through the Erie County Auto Bureau rather than renewing online with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. This effort helps keep up to $1.5 million in vital revenues within Erie County.

Riders can renew by mail or in person at any Erie County Auto Bureau. Appointments can be scheduled online or by calling the Clerk’s Outreach Hotline at 716-858-8864.

Renewal Instructions

To renew your snowmobile registration, complete the following:

  • Mail or bring your renewal notice
  • Include a photocopy of your existing snowmobile registration
  • Include a copy of the registrant’s New York State driver's license
  • Snowmobile club members must also include proof of membership in a New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) club

Mail all documents to:

Erie County Clerk’s Office
92 Franklin Street, Suite 1
Buffalo, NY 14202

Include a check made payable to “Erie County Clerk.” Your registration will be mailed back within 10 business days upon receipt.

To renew in person, schedule an appointment and bring all required documents to the Auto Bureau to receive your sled’s registration.

Trail Opening and Safety

The Erie County Federation of Snowmobile Clubs sets the official trail opening date as January 2, 2022, pending sufficient snow cover and conditions. Riders should check with local clubs for updated trail status and information on snowmobiling safety courses.

For safety, always stay on designated or signed trails.

Registration Fees

  • Snowmobile club members: $45
  • Non-members: $100

Most of the registration fee (all but $10) supports the Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund, which maintains over 10,500 miles of public snowmobile trails across New York State.

For information on joining a local club or obtaining a registration voucher, visit the NYSSA website at nysnowmobiler.com.
