NYS Department of Motor Vehicles Information Sharing
WHAT IS IT:
According to the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law 202.4, the Department of Motor Vehicles is permitted to sell personal registration information, under certain circumstances and for specific purposes, to third party contractors.
Information includes:
- Name and address of the owner of the vehicle
- Make
- Model
- Year
- Weight
- Body style
- Number of passengers
- Cylinders
- Fuel
- License number
- Type of registration
- Transaction
- Validation and expiration date
- Vehicle Identification Number of the vehicle
According to the NYS DMV website, information is used for safety, insurance quotes, recalls and research.
Can I Opt-Out?
According to the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law, drivers do have the option to have their information deleted from the third-party contractor's records. Registrants can ‘opt-out’, by writing to the third party contractor and expressing their wish to have their information deleted.
