The passport process at the Erie County Clerk’s Office allows U.S. citizens to obtain travel documents for themselves or their immediate family members. You may apply for a passport card, a passport book, or both.
A passport card is wallet-sized and valid for re-entry to the U.S. from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda via land or sea.
A passport book is a booklet document valid for international travel by air, land, and sea.
You Will Need
- Original or certified copy of U.S. birth certificate with raised seal and listing both parents, previous U.S. passport, or naturalization certificate
- Current New York State driver’s license, non-driver ID, pilot’s license, state or federal work ID, student ID, or military ID
- One 2” x 2” color passport photo (photos available on-site for $10)
You can obtain the application in advance at the Clerk’s Office or by the forms below. You may complete the application in advance, but do not sign it. Your signature must be witnessed by a certified passport acceptance agent.
Apply for a Passport
The Erie County Clerk’s Office accepts first-time applications and applications for children under 16. Our staff are certified passport acceptance agents.
Passport office hours:
- Old County Hall, 92 Franklin Street, Buffalo – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- West Seneca Office, 1086 B Union Road – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Thursdays until 7:00 PM)

No appointment is required. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before closing to ensure timely service.
Renewal applications must be mailed directly to the U.S. Department of State's Passport Agency. Only first-time applicants may apply through the County Clerk’s Office.
Processing times:
- Routine service: 4–6 weeks
- Expedited service: 2–3 weeks (additional $60 fee)
