Refuse/Garbage

The Town of Newstead and Village of Akron contract jointly with Modern Disposal Service for refuse and recycling pick up.

In 2023, new blue refuse carts were distributed to all residences.

Refuse (garbage) is picked up every week on Fridays in the town and village.

  • Trash must be put in plastic garbage bags (tied off to securely enclose refuse in bags)  Bags should be placed at the street in the new blue totes - you are no longer allowed to use your own garbage cans or put out bags as new trucks will be used by Modern that only pick up the new blue cans.
  • The new blue tote is to be placed out to the road no sooner than 6:00pm on Thursday and no later than 6:00am on Friday.

You are allowed to put out:

  1. As many bags of garbage as will fit in your new blue tote each week.  Do not put loose garbage in the can.
  2. (1) bulky item or white good at the curb every other week. Bulky items will now only be picked up twice per month, not every week.

***Please check the new 2025 calendar for which weeks are Bulky Item weeks!
