Veterans Day 2026: Honoring Those Who Served Our Nation

“Thank-A-Vet” Program Pays Tribute to Veterans Throughout Year

Veterans Day is observed each year on November 11, marking the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918, when the armistice that ended the fighting in World War I took effect. On this day, we honor the brave men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces and answered the call to defend our Nation. As America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, we are reminded that our freedom has been preserved through generations of service, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to our country.

From the American Revolution to the conflicts of today, our veterans have stood on the front lines of freedom. Whether serving during wartime or peacetime, they share a commitment to protecting our Constitution, defending our liberties, and safeguarding the American way of life. They are our parents, siblings, friends, coworkers, and neighbors—ordinary Americans who answered an extraordinary call to serve.

Here in Erie County, we are proud to be home to more than 65,000 veterans. Their service and sacrifice are woven into the fabric of our communities and our Nation’s history. As we commemorate 250 years of American independence, Veterans Day reminds us of our responsibility to honor those who have defended the principles upon which our country was founded. I encourage residents to attend a local ceremony, visit a memorial, thank a veteran personally, or display the American flag as a visible sign of gratitude.

At the Erie County Clerk’s Office, we honor our veterans 365 days a year through our Thank-A-Vet Discount Card Program. More than 1,500 participating local businesses offer discounts on goods and services to eligible veterans as a meaningful way to thank them for their service. We continue to encourage more businesses to join this effort and support our veteran community.

Veterans are also encouraged to file their military discharge papers, commonly known as DD-214s, with the Erie County Clerk’s Office. Filing these documents safeguards this important record and allows veterans and eligible family members to obtain free certified copies when needed. The Thank-A-Vet photo ID card is issued at no charge, providing veterans with valuable savings while helping local businesses demonstrate their appreciation.

Veterans who have not yet filed their discharge papers or obtained their Thank-A-Vet card can visit the Erie County Clerk’s Office at 92 Franklin Street in Buffalo or either of our Clerk’s Outreach Centers in Southgate Plaza in West Seneca or the Eastern Hills Mall in the Northtowns. As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, let us remember that our Nation’s history is defined not only by its founding, but also by the generations who have defended its promise of liberty. This Veterans Day, and every day, let us honor our veterans’ courage, recognize their sacrifices, and ensure their service to our country is never forgotten.
