A time to remind motorists and motorcyclists to safely share the roadways
The weather is warmer, daylight hours are longer, and spring is finally here. With motorcyclists across the county tuning up their bikes for the riding season, I would like to remind the public that motorcycle safety is everyone's responsibility.
Motorcycles are affordable, fuel-efficient, and just fun to ride. In Erie County alone, there are over 21,000 registered riders who use their motorcycles for commuting, touring, and recreational activities.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in the entire state of New York, motorcycles represent 3.5% of all registered motor vehicles. Despite this, they are disproportionately represented in traffic-related fatalities, accounting for as much as 18% of such fatalities. In addition, motorcyclist injuries have increased to 4,525 in 2023 compared to the previous year, with 188 of those resulting in a fatal crash, according to the Institute for Traffic Safety & Research.
I urge all drivers, particularly new motorists, to be aware of motorcycles and to share the road safely. Motorcyclists often ride to one side of the lane, and may be hidden in your vehicle’s blind spot. Always look twice before turning or changing lanes to ensure your path is clear. Maintain a greater following distance for motorcycles—two or three car lengths is recommended, and more if the roads are wet or visibility is poor.
Riders should adhere to motorcycle safety protocols: wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet that meets or exceeds U.S. Department of Transportation standards, ride within your skill limits, avoid riding in poor weather, use turn signals, and never ride while impaired or distracted. Riders can also benefit from motorcycle safety programs that teach critical skills for safe riding. This is especially useful for seasoned riders looking to reinforce safe driving practices. Graduates of these courses may qualify for insurance premium discounts with some insurers. Information on class locations and fees is available at nysmsp.org.
Before hitting the road this season, I want to remind motorcyclists that motorcycle registrations expire annually on April 30. Make sure to visit the Erie County Auto Bureau to ‘Renew Local’. Furthermore, it's important for motorcycle operators to be properly licensed; 36% of fatal motorcycle accidents involve unlicensed drivers. Taking the time to get licensed is not just legally required, it can save your life.
Ultimately, safe driving and riding practices, along with cooperation from all road users, will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our roadways. Together, by raising awareness and following the rules of the road, we can enhance safety for everyone. Let’s ride smart, ride safe, and enjoy the season.
