Buffalo became one of the movement's strongest footholds, with thousands of members spread throughout Erie County. But the Klan's grip on the region would ultimately be broken by the extraordinary courage of an undercover investigator whose sacrifice exposed the organization's inner workings. Popcorn & Pictures: “Mother Cabrini” Movie Day

Join University Express at the Akron-Newstead Senior Center for a special screening of Cabrini, the inspiring true story of Saint Frances Cabrini, filmed right here in Buffalo's historic mansions and landmarks. Arriving in New York City to find streets filled with impoverished children, disease, and crime, Mother Cabrini embarks on a daring mission, and despite poor health and fierce opposition from the city's hostile mayor, church hierarchy, and corrupt politicians, she uses her formidable entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering faith to build orphanages, schools, and hospitals for society's most vulnerable.

Filmed extensively in Buffalo in 2021, the movie used many of our region's well-preserved late-1800s locations-including InnBuffalo, the Ellicott Square Building, St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, Blessed Trinity Church, Shea's Buffalo Theatre, and Delaware Park-to stand in for Gilded Age New York, bringing local history to life on the big screen.

Don't miss this opportunity to see a powerful story of faith, resilience, and hope, filmed in the very buildings you may have explored in University Express classes on Buffalo's historic mansions. Popcorn & soda for all! All are welcome!

Bringing a Warhawk home

What does it take to bring a World War II fighter airplane home? This presentation tells the remarkable story of how volunteers from the Niagara Air & Space Museum acquired, transported, and reassembled a rare three-quarter-scale Curtiss P-40 Warhawk from the Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, New York. Through photographs and firsthand stories, you'll follow the project from a simple idea to a successful museum exhibit, learning about the planning, teamwork, engineering, and determination required to move an aircraft more than 150 miles. Along the way, you'll also discover the important role Western New York played during World War II, when Buffalo became one of the world's leading aircraft manufacturing centers and the P-40 Warhawk became a symbol of the region's industrial strength and wartime contribution. This engaging presentation celebrates local history, dedicated volunteers, and the preservation of our aviation heritage for future generations.
