Eleanor Ash is a longtime educator in Western New York and continues to be a lifelong learner, both professionally and personally. In addition to earning five college degrees, she was awarded two National Endowment for the Humanities grants for summer study in New York City and in Italy. As a volunteer for the AKG Art Gallery, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Explore Buffalo, and other organizations, she hopes her tour takers and program participants will, along with her, mutually enjoy increased knowledge, deepened understanding, and a renewed enthusiasm for life.

Mr. Bardot’s mission is to alleviate the stress of organizing a deceased person's affairs, making it easier for their survivors during such a vulnerable time.

Matthew is the Science and Operations Officer at the National Weather Service office in Buffalo, NY. In this position, he works at the intersection of research and forecast operations by investigating where and how we can improve our forecasts for hazardous weather, messaging to the public, and understanding of the atmosphere. He previously worked as a Meteorologist at the NWS weather forecast office in Cheyenne, WY for 6 years before arriving in Buffalo. Matthew has a B.S. in Meteorology from Penn State University and a M.S. in Atmospheric Science from Texas Tech University where he researched the distribution of lightning flash sizes within thunderstorms using observations and numerical modeling.

She retired after 37 years with the Federal Government, most of those years spent working for the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection. She was certified as a Master Docent by Preservation Buffalo Niagara and began giving walking, bus and trolley tours in 2005.She has worked for Triple A, Forest Lawn and is currently employed as a tour narrator Aboard the Miss Buffalo II. Susan Fenster is a historian and author with more than 30 years of writing experience. A graduate of Buffalo State College with degrees in History and Journalism, she has dedicated her career to documenting the stories and people who shaped New York State. Her forthcoming book explores the remarkable life of Harry Altman, the legendary operator of Buffalo’s Town Casino and the Glen Casino in Williamsville. Once the region’s premier entertainment venues, these showplaces hosted some of the nation’s biggest stars and helped define the cultural heartbeat of Western New York in the mid-20th century. She is an active member of the Williamsville Historical Preservation Commission and the Williamsville Historical Society. Harry Altman: Buffalo's Master Showman will be her fourth work of nonfiction. She currently lives in the Village of Williamsville.

Rachelle became fascinated with presidential history, and specifically the Fillmore family history when the Fillmore Museum opened in 1979, quickly becoming a docent there and later his biographer. Recently her double biography of "The Two Wives of Millard Fillmore" was published. As social studies instructional leader for the OP elementary schools, she wrote curriculum for both local and statewide distribution, as well as five books on local history with her history club. She is also a frequent Chautauqua presenter.

Kathy Frankiewich is a retired nurse practitioner in Pediatrics and Psychiatry. She worked for Kaleida Health for 39 years in the premature intensive care nursery, and most recently in the Robert Warner Center for Children. She is also an experienced energy worker, trained in Healing Touch, Myofascial Release, and LuMarion Healing. She combines these methods to provide individualized care, promoting deep physical, emotional and spiritual healing. People are able to heal at the deepest levels, gaining self-understanding, self-forgiveness, and self-love, and are able to create the life they want.

Mustafa Gökçek is a Professor and Chair of the History Department at Niagara University. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in International Relations at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. Dr. Gökçek served as a visiting researcher at the People’s Friendship University, Moscow, Russia. He then pursued his Ph.D. in history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His dissertation focused on Muslim intellectuals from Russia, who migrated to Istanbul in the early twentieth century and actively engaged in the intellectual discussions on Islam and Turkish nationalism. His research interests include contemporary social movements in Muslim societies. Dr. Gökçek currently teaches courses on the history of the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East, Russia, and Central Asia. He helped establish the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program at Niagara University.

Aileen, originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, has demonstrated exceptional artistic talent since childhood. After relocating in 2011, she became the Art Director of the Hispanic Heritage Council. She later co‑founded LADB, an organization that provides mentorship and a vital platform for Hispanic artists to showcase their work without fear of rejection. Aileen has played a significant role in enriching the community’s cultural and aesthetic landscape, including the creation of community murals along Niagara Street. She recently launched “Luz d Tull,” a family‑owned online boutique based in New York that offers unique, Hispanic‑inspired attire and creative workshops. In addition to her artistic endeavors, Aileen manages the older adult programming at West Side Community Services, where she shares her talents with the senior community.

Debra Hall-Stonish has been a life-long resident of the Buffalo area where she still lives with her husband of over 50 years. She holds a BA and an MBA from SUNY at Buffalo. Her career revolved around finance and business where she held positions as VP at Marine Midland and M&T Banks; President of her family’s construction company; and CFO for a religious order. Debra also taught at her alma mater, UB, for 7 years as well as in the Entrepreneurship program at UB for 5 years. She is now retired and can pursue her interests in traveling and giving tours. She is an enthusiastic promoter of Buffalo and proud to see its renaissance. Although she would have been happier to see it happening in her 20s, she’ll take it in her 70s!

Faizan M. Haq is a respected educator, community leader, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of academic and business experience. He has taught at Buffalo State University for more than two decades, specializing in Intercultural, Organizational, and International Communication, and previously served over 20 years at SUNY Buffalo.
His research and lectures focus on global and cultural understanding, covering topics such as media perceptions of Muslims, Middle Eastern affairs, and communication in a digital world. A frequent presenter in the Great Decisions and University Express programs, Mr. Haq has spoken on issues ranging from U.S.–Muslim world relations to the future of global leadership.
He holds a B.A. in American Studies from SUNY Buffalo and an M.S. in Multidisciplinary Studies from Buffalo State University. Beyond teaching, he has been an active advisor to student associations and continues to promote dialogue on diversity, peace, and community engagement.

Dr. Kevin R. Hardwick received his Ph.D. from SUNY-Binghamton. He has been a political science professor at Canisius College since 1989 and is a former chair of the department. He previously hosted Hardline with Kevin Hardwick, a weekly WBEN radio program on local politics. Dr. Hardwick's involvement in politics and the policy process dates back to his senior year in high school when he was elected to a seat on the Susquehanna Valley Board of Education in the Binghamton area. He subsequently served as councilman in the Town of Binghamton, Administrative Assistant to the Majority Leader of the New York State Senate, First Ward Council Member in the City of Tonawanda, Erie County Legislator and currently as Erie County Comptroller. His unique blend of formal training and practical political experience contributes to lively discussions in his classes at Canisius and to his effectiveness as an elected official.

Jennifer serves as program coordinator for SUAAOA at the Center for Elder Law and Justice, focusing on Erie County. In this role, they design and deliver community outreach and educational presentations that highlight the distinct challenges substance use poses for older adults—a population whose needs are often overlooked in traditional substance use programming.
Jennifer is qualified to both administer and train others in naloxone use—skills that directly enhance their community education efforts. Jennifer graduated from Canisius University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, providing a foundational understanding of human behavior and mental health that informs their compassionate, person-centered advocacy approach.
Prior to this role, Jennifer spent 4 years as a paralegal in the agency's housing unit, where they assisted clients facing eviction and navigating housing code violations. This experience provided firsthand insight into how legal challenges, housing insecurity, and health issues compound vulnerabilities for older adults—knowledge that now informs their holistic approach to substance use advocacy.

Emily Jarnot is a Preservation Planner and Niagara Falls Liaison with Preservation Buffalo Niagara, where she has spent the past two years leading a wide range of preservation initiatives. She has successfully landmarked nearly twenty buildings in Buffalo and is known for her engaging public tours, including hard-hat, photography, and dark history experiences at sites such as the Richardson Olmsted Campus, the former Wonder Bread Factory, and The Statler Buffalo. A dedicated researcher with a deep love of local history, Emily has completed numerous private research projects for property owners, helping them uncover and interpret the stories behind their buildings. She also serves as Vice President of the Oakwood Cemetery Heritage Foundation in Niagara Falls, supporting its mission to preserve and educate the public about one of the region’s most historic landscapes. Emily’s work reflects her passion for storytelling, community engagement, and the protection of Western New York’s heritage.

A versatile educator and administrator, Dr. Kleinmartin’s teaching portfolio spans from university-level Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology to Middle and Upper School Mathematics and adult Digital Literacy. Beyond the classroom, his professional background includes extensive work with the SUNY at Buffalo Archaeological Survey, where he managed diverse responsibilities ranging from grant writing and budgeting to IT administration. An accomplished author and illustrator, he has contributed to the Expansion of America series and provided cartography for various academic texts. He currently serves as a Program Coordinator with Literacy Buffalo Niagara.

Douglas Kohler

Douglas Kohler is a local historian and author who has written extensively about early Western New York. He taught history at Clarence Middle School for 36 years before retiring last June. In 2009, he was appointed Erie County historian. He earned history degrees from Canisius College and Pace University and is working on his PhD at the University of Reading (UK), with a focus on portrayals of race and gender at world’s fairs and expositions. As county historian, he is currently working with the Buffalo History Museum on developing the content for the 125th anniversary of the Pan-American Exposition. He was part of the team that put together the Erie Canal exhibit at Canalside. He also does research and writing for Buffalo/Toronto Public Media's award winning series, “Compact History.”

As the Erie County Forester, Joshua is responsible to manage and help maintain the forests and trees throughout the 10,000 acres of the Erie County Parks system. The forests are so much more than just the trees and caring for all this also involves environmental compliance, invasive species management, protecting our soil and water resources, and supporting the wildlife habitat within the parks.
Joshua brings to the Erie County Parks more than a dozen years of professional experience in ecological conservation and restoration. He has a BS in Restoration Ecology from Buffalo State College and is pursuing a graduate certificate in Forest Resource Management from Paul Smiths College. He is a certified ecological restoration practitioner with the Society for Ecological Restoration and is dedicated to providing management solutions that are sustainable and benefit the ecological communities that he is responsible for.

For the past 12 years she has been an American Legion certified service officer advocating for the veterans to get their earned benefits. Since October 2022 she has been the head of the department.

TinaMarie Kumiega’s motto is “Life is adventure!” She was born on Buffalo’s East side but has lived in 3 states, returning to Buffalo after she retired because “there’s no place like home.” TinaMarie retired after 26 years in law enforcement. During that time she worked Patrol, Detective Bureau, Community Policing, Crime Prevention, and Vice. She also owned a small restaurant in Michigan, taught cooking classes for Tops Market here in Buffalo, and hosted several community access television talk shows in Orlando, Florida and Wyandotte, Michigan. Explore Buffalo is her newest adventure!

Before retiring, Cheryl McDonald worked as a human resource manager at Chicago Title for twenty years. After retirement she took a training program to be a Buffalo tour guide; that led to being a founding member of Explore Buffalo. Cheryl now serves on various committees and gives all four of the Delaware Avenue Tours. In a previous life, Cheryl served as the president of the General Federation of Women’s Club-Aurora’s Women’s Club for two years. The thing that Cheryl loves most about Buffalo is obviously the people.

York Norman is professor of Middle Eastern and Eastern European history at Buffalo State University. He specializes in Turkish, Ottoman and Balkan history. Although he currently has been researching the history of Turkish political thought from the Young Turks to the Cold War, he has also done considerable work on Islamization and socio-economic development in Sarajevo from 1461-1604, including a PhD dissertation. He completed his masters degrees at Indiana and Bilkent Universities, and doctorate at Georgetown University. He spent considerable time abroad in both former Yugoslavia and Turkey.

Nada Odeh is a Syrian artist, activist, and humanitarian whose work centers on cultural heritage and the experiences of displaced Syrians. She is the Founder and Director of Arabesques, a nonprofit that celebrates Middle Eastern and North African arts, and the Founder of QuartsX, which provides creative and consulting services for museums and cultural institutions. Originally from Damascus, she launched her project “Nada’s Picassos” there before bringing it to Dubai, Michigan, and now New York State. Working primarily in acrylics and Arabic miniatures, her art reflects Middle Eastern colors, intricate detail, and stories of Syrian refugees, especially women in exile. She holds an M.A. in Museum Studies from Syracuse University and a B.A. in Fine Arts from Damascus University. As a freelance curator, she has developed projects on immigration and folklore arts, creating platforms that uplift immigrant communities and foster cross-cultural dialogue.

Phil Stevens retired in 2019 after 48 years in the Anthropology Department at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. He received his B.A. in English from Yale in 1963, then served with the Peace Corps in Nigeria for three years. Those experiences brought him into anthropology, and he and received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1973. He has conducted anthropological research in West Africa and the Caribbean. He is the author of many publications in cultural anthropology and African studies. Among his honors are two awards for excellence in teaching, and an African chieftaincy title! One of his most popular courses at UB was on the anthropology of Magic, Sorcery, and Witchcraft; and his book on that topic was published in 2024 by Routledge. He lectures frequently to community groups on subjects of current concern.s

Budd has been part of the local sports media since 1977. He’s hosted a radio talk show on WEBR, worked in public relations for the Buffalo Sabres, was part of the sports staff of The Buffalo News, and written 15 books. Budd currently serves as a Field Timing Coordinator for the Buffalo Bisons, and does other freelance writing. He’s on the Media Advisory Board of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, and on the Board of the WNY Running Hall of Fame. Stu grew up in Rochester NY. He was a “go-fee” at WAXC radio in Rochester. Eventually he got on the air at the radio station. While at WAXC Stu met Rich Funke & he taught him so many things. Stu then kept in touch with Rich & after transferring to Syracuse he hired him at WHEC-TV. Budd & Stu met at SU. After working four part time jobs after graduation Stu got a full time job in Erie Pa at WSEE-TV and came to Ch 2 in 1985. Now Stu do high school play by play for WNYATHLETICS.

Lindsey Lauren Visser is the City of Buffalo Historian and a researcher specializing in the history of the Western New York region.
She earned her Bachelor’s in History & Political Science from Canisius University and her MSt from the University of Oxford in Modern History. She is currently pursuing a Master’s of Education from Harvard University with a focus on K-12 social studies education policy.
She has worked in several of the area’s historical nonprofits, including the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site, The Buffalo History Museum, Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation, and the Italian Cultural Center. Presently, she serves as the Executive Director of the Niagara Aerospace Museum.
Lindsey Lauren has served on the boards of the Buffalo Presidential Center and Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village and is currently the Vice President of Membership and Outreach for the Niagara Frontier Council for the Social Studies and the Secretary of the New York Public History Trust. She sits on the Erie Canal Bicentennial Steering Committee and the Niagara County 250th Commission and is an active member of the Association of Public Historians of New York State.
She has been a writer and contributing historian for WIVB’s Daytime Buffalo, The Buffalo History Museum Podcast, The New York Minute in History podcast, and has written several exhibits for area museums. Most recently, she has been featured on the American History Hit podcast with Travel Channel's Don Wildman.

Rachael Young, LMSW is a Clinical Facilitator at the Wilson Support Center. The Wilson Support Center provides grief support and education that is sensitive, compassionate and responsive to the needs of the WNY community. As an affiliate of Hospice Buffalo, the Wilson Support Center also delivers bereavement services to bereaved loved ones of hospice patients. In the role of Clinical Facilitator, Rachael is responsible for triaging and personalizing grief support, developing resource and referral databases, and fostering community relationships through education and training. She also facilitates grief support groups and maintains a specialized caseload of counseling clients. Rachael has former experience as a community social worker, with a particular focus on the mental health needs of school-age children and their families. She also holds a yoga teacher training certification as well.

Shauna Zorich is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health at the University at Buffalo’s School of Public Health and Health Professions. Dr. Zorich develops and instructs public health and epidemiology courses for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and is engaged in scholarly activity which primarily focuses on pedagogy in public health. Dr. Zorich studied Biology at Canisius University, then earned her medical degree and master’s in public health from the University at Buffalo. She also completed a residency in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the University at Buffalo. Prior to her academic position at the University at Buffalo, she served as a US Air Force commissioned officer and spent five years stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as an active-duty Preventive Medicine Consultant.
