Current Classes

Welcome! 

1) Read through the catalog to see what interests you. You can also search for classes below using our search tool. All University Express classes are free and either in-person or virtual using Webex. Some of the in-person classes will be livestreamed on-site and you will be able to log on and watch from home. This is the first time we are offering this option. We ask that you please be patient and understanding if issues arise. Be sure to visit us here regularly for the latest schedule and list of recordings!

2) Register for the classes that interest you.

Virtual Classes: Visit our Virtual Classes page to register for the classes you want to virtually attend. You’ll receive an email confirming your registration status after registering. You can call our office for assistance if you do not have internet access.

In-Person Classes: Call the location where the in-person class is offered and reserve your spot ahead of time. Consider making a lunch or dinner reservation too so you can enjoy our Stay Fit Dining meals either before or after the class! Lunch and dinner reservations must be made at least one week in advance. We will be uploading schedules for each location in the near future! 

3) Make sure you have the right technology. You can access the virtual classes from your smartphone, tablet, or computer. You may also phone in if you’d just like to listen to the presentation. 

4) Participate in the classes you registered for!

Virtual Classes: Once your registration is accepted, you will receive email reminders before the class(es) start that you can join from. 

In-Person Classes: Make sure you called the location ahead of time to register. Be sure to follow all safety guidelines at the location you are attending.

Your Best Shot: Understanding Adult Vaccines

Vaccines have dramatically reduced the burden of infectious diseases and continue to play a vital role in protecting health, especially as we age. This lecture explains how vaccines work, reviews their history and impact, and discusses current recommendations for influenza, COVID-19, shingles, pneumococcal disease, and others. Common questions and misconceptions will also be addressed to help participants make informed decisions about vaccination.

Probate and Probate Avoidance: What Happens to Your Assets After Death?

Many individuals are surprised to learn that a Will does not avoid probate. This presentation will explain the probate process in New York, including how assets are transferred after death, the role of the Surrogate's Court, and the responsibilities of executors and beneficiaries. Participants will learn which assets pass through probate, which assets pass outside of probate, and common strategies used to simplify estate administration and avoid unnecessary court involvement. The course will also discuss probate avoidance techniques, including beneficiary designations, joint ownership, transfer-on-death arrangements, and trust planning.

The images included represent an immensely diverse industrial base when the East Side was the ethnic, cultural, and manufacturing center for Buffalo and Western New York. Stay Safe: Protect Yourself from Medication Scams

Every day, Americans are losing millions of dollars to scammers. Older adults are particularly targeted, and the effects of scams can be catastrophic, both financially and emotionally. Technology is making it easier for scammers to target more people and it makes their schemes harder to detect. But there are things we can do to stay safe. This course will focus on medication scams, but techniques covered can be used against many types of scams and misleading marketing. It will examine how scammers mislead those who are suffering, stealing their money and endangering their health. It will cover how to distinguish real medicine from false promises. The interactive format allows participants to practice protective behaviors and begin to develop habits that will keep them safe from scams. Participants will also have access to supplemental online resources to continue to refine their scam-safety skills

Why are so many things named Ellicott in WNY? Come meet the man in person.

The name Ellicott is found in buildings, creeks, squares, towns and roads all over WNY. 2026 marks the 200th anniversary of Ellicott's death. This presentation will bring Ellicott back to life in a first person, costumed portrayal set in 1824 as he relates the details of his life and impact on our area including bringing the Erie Canal to WNY. History will be brought to life in this living depiction of one of WNY's founding fathers.

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

Held in March, the annual dogsled race, which began in 1973, covers almost 1,000 miles between Anchorage and Nome, Alaska. The race follows the route of a medical emergency back in 1925.
