INDIVIDUAL INCARCERATED FOR PAROLE VIOLATIONS AND DRUG CHARGES STRIKES AND SPITS ON CORRECTION OFFICERS

Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reports the injuries of multiple Correction Officers after an incarcerated individual initiated a fight at the Erie County Correctional Facility.

On February 11, multiple Officers attempted to secure David Ortiz Ramos in a housing unit when he became combative. During the incident, three Officers sustained minor injuries.

As Ortiz Ramos was being secured in his cell, he spat into the eye of another Officer. While in the cell, the incarcerated individual began damaging county property. Ortiz Ramos ignored orders to stop, and a chemical agent was deployed to gain compliance.

Ortiz Ramos, who is incarcerated on NYS parole violations and drug-related charges, is facing administrative charges. The Sheriff Police Services and Investigative Services are investigating the incident, and Ortiz Ramos may face criminal charges.

The Officers received initial medical care from correctional health staff, and the Officer who was spit on was treated at a local hospital and released. All Officers have returned to duty.
