HOLDING CENTER MEDICAL STAFF DISCOVERS MASS IN AN INCARCERATED INDIVIDUAL

Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reports that the Division of Correctional Health medical staff discovered an abdominal mass in a 59-year-old incarcerated individual.

While at Erie County Holding Center, an incarcerated individual was seen routinely for vague complaints of abdominal pain. The patient with underlying mental health diagnoses could not articulate his medical complaints, and if it were not for the efforts of the correctional health staff who, after a comprehensive evaluation of the patient by a staff nurse practitioner who ordered a battery of tests, a 10” mass in the male’s abdomen cavity would have gone undiagnosed.

The patient was transferred to a local hospital for the necessary medical care.

“The work done by the Division of Correctional Health’s professional medical staff is amazing,” stated Sheriff Garcia. “If not for their training and compassion, this individual’s condition could have gone undiagnosed and worsened to the point where it would have been too late for proper medical care.”

The patient remains hospitalized and is in stable condition.
