DEPUTY INJURED WHILE RESPONDING TO A MENTAL HEALTH INCIDENT

Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia announces a Deputy was injured while assisting Crisis Services with an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.

On March 20, at approximately 6:26 p.m., Deputies responded to a Clarence residence after a mental health assessment determined the individual needed further evaluation and treatment at a hospital facility.

Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation. However, the individual refused several commands and began physically resisting Deputies. During the altercation, a Deputy sustained injuries to their head, shoulder, and arm.

The subject was transported to Erie County Medical Center, and the Deputy was treated and released following a medical exam. The Deputy is expected to make a recovery and return to work.
