BUFFALO DRIVER CHARGED WITH LEANDRA’S LAW

Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reports the arrest of a Buffalo resident following a DWI investigation on July 16, 2023, in the town of Grand Island.

At approximately 7:04 p.m., deputies responded to a crash on South State Parkway near Beaver Island State Park. EMS personnel treated the driver and four minor passengers. Two minors were transported to Oishei Children’s Hospital, and a third was transported to Erie County Medical Center for further evaluation of minor injuries.

Deputies administered standard field sobriety tests to 37-year-old Amber Makey of Buffalo. Makey was arrested following the sobriety tests and transported to the Grand Island Substation, where she submitted to a breath test. The chemical test results were a BAC nearly two and a half times greater than the legal limit.

Deputies charged Makey with four felony counts of aggravated DWI – with a child passenger in the vehicle, four misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor count of aggravated DWI, and a count of DWI. The defendant was also charged with three infractions for the back seat passengers not wearing seat belts.

Makey was released on appearance tickets, and the Sheriff’s Office contacted Child Protective Services.
