LaGarrett J. King, Ph.D. is a Professor of Social Studies Education and Founding Director for the Center for K-12 Black History and Racial Literacy Education at the University at Buffalo. He is an award-winning scholar who specialize in the teaching and learning of Black history in schools and society. He was recently the recipient of the Spirit or America Award sponsored by NCSS (The National Council of the Social Studies), whose previous recipients included Rosa Parks, John Lewis, and Jimmy Carter. He has published over 60 scholarly writings including 4 books. 

He is most known for his Black history education framework, which has been adopted at several school districts nationwide.  His current book project, Teaching Black History for Grades 6-12: An Introduction to the Black Historical Consciousness Framework for Teachers, will expand on his Black history education framework and will be published in 2026.
