Erie County, along with a big portion of the nation, can expect exceptionally cold weather over at least the next week. Combined with periods of intense snow and wind, conditions will be dangerous for people who spend time outside and those who need to be on the roads.
Cold-related conditions
Anyone who spends time outside when temperatures are extremely low can be at risk for cold-related conditions like frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite affects the skin, especially extremities like fingers, toes, noses and ears, causing red, pale or waxy skin, pain or tingling. Hypothermia symptoms can include intense shivering, fatigue, confusion and slurred speech, and it is a medical emergency - call 9-1-1 if you suspect hypothermia in yourself or someone you are with.
These conditions are preventable with some simple, common-sense steps:
- Wear a hat that covers ears and cover all exposed skin
- Dress in layers: moisture-wicking base, thermal shirt, sweatshirt, insulated jacket with a waterproof shell
- Protect extremities: warm gloves/mittens, wool socks, waterproof boots
- Use hand/foot warmers and stay hydrated with water or warm drinks
- Take frequent breaks from outdoor activities
Heart Health
In cold weather, the heart has to work harder to pump blood, especially during activities like snow shoveling. This sudden exertion can increase risks for heart attacks, including with people who have an existing heart condition. Dressing warmly and taking frequent breaks when outside can reduce heart strain and health risks.
If you are an older adult or have a chronic health issue, avoid heavy outdoor work during very cold weather. Anyone with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness while out in cold weather should stop what they are doing, seek medical attention and call 9-1-1.
Slips and Falls
Ice and snow on sidewalks and driveways increase the risks of slips and falls, and the risk of broken bones, head trauma and bruising.
- Wear boots or shoes with good traction.
- Take short, careful steps – like a penguin! - and take your time.
- Keep your hands free for balance.
- Clear snow and ice from surfaces, and spread salt or sand to reduce slip and fall hazards.
- Shovel with a buddy, and take frequent breaks.
- If a medical emergency is suspected, call 9-1-1.
Home Heating
When outdoor temperatures drop, households may look for alternate ways to keep homes warm. If your household uses space heaters:
- Place space heaters on a flat surface.
- Keep at least three feet of space between heating equipment and anything that can burn.
- Do not allow children or pets to go near space heaters open fires, or other heat sources.
- Plug space heaters into a wall, never a power strip. Check for damage to cords and plugs.
- Turn off space heaters before leaving a room and before going to bed.
Carbon monoxide is a deadly, colorless and odorless gas, and there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning when using a gas ovens for heat. Never use an oven to heat your home. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, move to a space with fresh air immediately and call 9-1-1.
Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home monthly, and make sure they are properly installed on each floor and outside sleeping areas.
Neighbors and Pets
- Check on vulnerable neighbors, especially households that include older adults, young children, and people with medical conditions or disabilities.
- If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for pets – bring them inside.
Communications
- Monitor weather forecasts and check for travel and traffic interruptions. With the storm system affecting a lot of the country, air travel may be affected.
