Borden Road Project Phase II Completed, Phase III Set to Begin; $7.8 million Bailey Ave. Reconstruction Complete, other Road Reconstruction Projects Ongoing
$3.1 million in Mill & Overlay projects Largely Complete; $1.5 million Oil & Chip Program Completed
Erie County Investing Over $50 million in Infrastructure in 2026
ERIE COUNTY, NY— A busy road construction season is continuing into September in Erie County, with many projects already completed or substantially complete and others ongoing across the county. Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz today joined Deputy Commissioner of Public Works – Highways Karen Hoak and DPW personnel on Borden Road in Cheektowaga to review a major reconstruction project happening there and discuss progress on the overall 2026 road program, an investment of over $50 million.
“2026 has been a very busy year for our Public Works department and that will continue for as long as the weather allows,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “We were able to complete many projects this summer, prior to the start of school, while others are ongoing and/or substantially complete. This includes big projects like here on Borden Road, where Phase II of a very involved, multi-year reconstruction project has been completed and Phase III, a $7.5 million investment, is set to begin. As the seasons change, the work continues to improve major routes across the county.”
Phase I of the Borden Road project involved an initial $11.7 million investment that began this multi-year reconstruction, which includes new sewer line placement as well as total road reconstruction. Phase II of the project, an $8.5 million investment, covered Borden from French to Strasmer; Phase III will reconstruct the stretch of Borden from French Rd. to Seneca Creek Road and bring the total investment on Borden Road alone to $27.7 million.
Over $41.7 million in reconstruction projects dominated the infrastructure investment for 2026. Among them, Bailey Ave. from Grover Cleveland to Sheridan Dr., a $7.8 million federal aid project covering 1.2 miles, has been completed. Along with the Borden Rd. project, several other road reconstruction projects are still ongoing and include:
- Elmwood Ave. from Knoche to Kenmore Ave., a 1.45-mile stretch, ($9.7 million)
- McKinley Pkwy. from Quinby Rd. to Southwestern Blvd., 2 miles ($4.7 million), is substantially complete

Phase II of the Maple Rd. project, covering 1.5 miles from North Forest to the bridge over the I-290 and including the bridge spanning Ellicott Creek ($3 million)

Five miles of Greiner Rd. (from Anfield – Salt, 4.57 miles) and Eggert Rd. (from Sugar to City Line, .56 miles) are receiving $3.5 million in road work.
Additionally, a $5.5 million investment is beginning this week on North Forest Rd. (from Maple to Dodge) and Bowen Rd. (from Seneca to Rice Rd.)
This year, Erie County invested over $3.1 million in mill and overlay projects across four highway districts, covering 12.85 miles. Completed projects include:
- In the Concord district, Genesee Rd. from Rte. 240 to Pratham Rd., 1.51 miles
- In the Harlem district, Aero Dr. from Youngs circle to Wehrle (.76 miles) and Indian Church from Buffalo City Line to Mineral Springs (1.47 miles)
- In the Hamburg district, Boston State Rd. from Mill to Zimmerman (5.27 miles), Webster Rte. 277 to Rte. 20 (1.2 miles), and Pleasant Ave. from RR to I-90 overpass (1.5 miles).
- In the Aurora district, mill and overlay on Center from Crump to Holland Glenwood, 1.14 miles, is ongoing.
More than 17 miles of county roads received cold recycle with top course treatment this year, representing an investment of over $3.6 million. Completed projects include:
- In the Clarence district, Roll from Goodrich to Shimerville (1.26 miles), Bullis from Three Rod to County Line (1.55 miles), Thompson from Clarence Center to Roll (1 mile), and Stahley (entirety, 2.74 miles)
- In the Aurora district, Curriers Sardinia from Rte. 16 to Miller (1.13 miles)
- In the Harlem district, Tonawanda Creek from Hopkins to Transit (3.16 miles)
- In the Hamburg district, Eden Evans Center/West Church 62 Townline (1.7 miles)
Ongoing cold recycle projects include:
- In the Concord district, Gowanda Zoar from S. Quaker to Lone Rd. (2.26 miles) and Gowanda Zoar from RR to S. Quaker (.81 miles)
- In the Aurora district, Warner Hill from Rte. 16 to Vermont Hill (2.06 miles), and Phillips from Partridge to Holland Glenwood (1.5 miles)
Erie County’s Oil & Chip program is complete for 2026 with 45.6 miles of roads in outlying areas receiving this maintenance process through a $1.5 million investment.
