ERIE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND PLANNING TO OFFER THREE WASTE COLLECTION EVENTS THIS FALL

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning will offer three drive-thru waste collection opportunities this fall for paint and battery collection events on Saturday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 17, as well as a household hazardous waste, paint and battery collection event on Saturday, Nov. 7.

All three of the events will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Registration is required and opens 30 days prior to each event. It can be completed by making an online reservation at www.erie.gov/recycling or by calling the Recycling Information Line at (716) 858-6800. Appointments are limited and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. The exact location for each event will be provided upon registration to avoid creating long wait times.

Specific details for the first two collection opportunities are as follows:

• Saturday, Sept. 12: Paint and Battery Collection held at a location in the City of Buffalo. This event will be sponsored by GreenSheen, the City of Buffalo, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal D. Peoples Stokes, Assemblymember William Conrad and Assemblymember Karen McMahon

• Saturday, Oct. 17: a Paint and Battery Collection will be held in the Town of Hamburg. GreenSheen is also sponsoring this event along with New York State Senator Patrick M. Gallivan and New York State Assemblymember Jonathan D. Rivera

The following materials will be accepted at both Paint and Battery collection events: latex, oil-based and acrylic paint, stains, shellacs, lacquers, sealers, varnishes, and urethanes, rechargeable and single use batteries. GreenSheen will use the collected paint to make a recycled paint product, which is sold throughout New York State.

There is no limit to the number of materials you can bring to the paint and battery collections however businesses should only bring paint.

***PLEASE NOTE***: no household hazardous waste will be accepted on Sept. 12 and Oct. 17.

Specific details for the third collection opportunity are as follows:

Saturday, Nov. 7: Erie County will partner with the Town of Hamburg in providing site and staffing assistance for a Household Hazardous Waste, Paint, and Battery collection event. The event will be sponsored by the Northeast Southtowns Local Solid Waste Management Board. Residents who are registered will be able to properly dispose of many types of hazardous household materials such as most household chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline, all types of paints, and batteries. These products have labels that indicate they are toxic, flammable, or explosive. A complete list of acceptable materials is available at www.erie.gov/hhw .

Residents unable to attend these collection events can utilize the Erie County Household Hazardous Waste Voucher Drop-off Program year-round, which allows registered residents to bring up to 50 pounds of eligible hazardous waste to a private facility in Tonawanda subsidized by Erie County. The facility also accepts all paints and associated materials as noted above.

Registration for that service is required and can be done either by visiting www.erie.gov/recycling and clicking on “Household Hazardous Waste” or by calling (716) 998-8073.

Support for these collection programs is provided by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Northeast Southtowns Solid Waste Management Board, Northwest Communities Solid Waste Management Board, GreenSheen, and PaintCare.
