Legislator Todaro sponsors unanimously-supported bill to decrease property taxes for veterans in Erie County

Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro sponsored and voted to pass a new local law to increase property tax exemptions for veterans in Erie County during the most recent session of the Erie County Legislature. The new law would give a 67% increase over the current property tax exemption limits, raising the levels to $30,000, $20,000 and $100,000.

Legislator Todaro said, “Everyone in this country is feeling the effects of a slowing economy and rising prices. It’s long overdue that veterans in Erie County receive updated property tax exemption limits and get much deserved tax relief. As a county legislator, I will continue to propose and advocate for legislation that will return tax dollars to Erie County residents and support our veterans.”

The original exemption limits in Erie County were set in 1997 at $18,000, $12,000 and $60,000. These new exemptions will take effect as soon as the law is filed with the Secretary of State. Legislators Lorigo, Mills and Greene also co-sponsored this law and it was passed unanimously through the legislature. The law can be viewed here.
