LEGISLATOR TODARO HONORS VOLUNTEERS FOR HEROISM IN BLIZZARD

Thanks volunteers for their lifesaving efforts

Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro honored the heroic efforts of the many volunteers who stepped up to save people during the December blizzard at a recent session of the Erie County Legislature.

“These volunteers left their homes and families to go rescue those in need.  They bravely answered the call and we are filled with gratitude for what they did,” said Legislator Todaro.

Todaro was joined by his colleagues in the Republican caucus in presenting a proclamation to the Erie County Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.  Club members used their own snowmobiles, Sno-Cat groomers and ATVs to help rescue people trapped in their vehicles, transport essential workers and assist so many more who were stranded without power.  “They were able to get to so many of those who were stranded at a time when even a lot of emergency vehicles were stuck.  They got them to places that were warm and safe. They bring with them equipment and a level of expertise on how to get around in a blizzard,” said Legislator Todaro.

More than 40 lives were lost in the storm, but Legislator Todaro said the devastation and human toll would have been even worse if not for the heroics of these snowmobile club members.

“There were people freezing in homes and cars.  People that couldn’t get to somewhere safe.  These volunteers risked their own safety to help others.  They are true heroes,” said Legislator Todaro.
