LEGISLATOR TODARO CALLS FOR CONVICTED MURDERER TO BE REMOVED FROM ERIE COUNTY

Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro is requesting the New York State Department of Corrections to place a convicted murderer outside of Erie County.  The NYSDOC sent Chad Campbell to live in Erie County after being granted parole. He has introduced a resolution requesting the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision change their decision and move Campbell elsewhere.

In 1990 Campbell raped, then repeatedly stabbed a 15-year-old girl and a 17-month-old baby boy she was babysitting. In a premeditated move, Campbell had requested the girl meet him at the school sport’s field, where the killing took place.  He was convicted of second-degree murder in September 1991.

“In May of last year the New York State Parole Board affirmed their decision to keep Chad Campbell behind bars, pointing to the fact that there were multiple victims, including a baby boy, that Campbell lured his female victim with the intent to harm her, and even more appalling, after killing them, he rode his bike home, changed, washed up and went to a soccer game,” said Legislator Frank Todaro.  “He showed no regard for the lives of the innocent victims.”

The State Parole Board adopted a rule change to parole considerations for offenders who committed violent crimes as minors, which requires them to consider age and brain development at the time of the crime. Because of this change, Chad Campbell was granted parole.  Wayne County officials, where the incident occurred, requested he not be released back into their community.  As such a discretionary decision was made to release him in Erie County.

“He’s a dangerous man who committed an unthinkable and unforgiveable crime.  Chad Campbell should not even be out of prison. But because of these new policies, he is a free man.  I’m calling on the Department of Corrections to remove him from Erie County.  He is not welcome here,” said Legislator Todaro.

The resolution is being co-sponsored by Legislators John Mills, Chris Greene, and Lindsay Lorigo.
