As the Erie County Executive prepares to release his budget, it should be noted that his continued focus on the tax rate does not truly help most people’s bottom lines. It’s the tax levy that we should be talking about. The levy has increased for many Erie County taxpayers, making life less affordable in Western New York.
I’m pleased the Erie County Legislature unanimously passed the one-hundred percent real property tax exemption on the primary residence of seriously disabled veterans. The qualifying veteran must have suffered a debilitating injury while serving our country and received an honorable discharge. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs makes the determination as to whether the veteran is permanently and totally disabled because of their military service. That acknowledgement comes by letter, official form or other document. You must verify eligibility through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
I am also pushing for New York State to fully reimburse Erie County for costs associated with the Corrections Officer’s Strike. The state did provide $2.2 million for housing individuals meant to be in state custody, but that is still more than $600,000 less than what is owed. New York State needs to do the right thing.
I remain deeply concerned about the extraordinary cost to renovate Como Lake Park Shelter 14. This renovation cost taxpayers more than half a million dollars. There is not even any electricity at this shelter for something as simple as plugging in a crockpot. I am looking through documentation to gain insight as to why this renovation would cost so much, and quite frankly, it doesn’t make any sense. As a legislature we support improvements to our parks and playgrounds. But the expectation is, with a more than $500,000 bill, there should be something more to show for it. I will continue seeking answers. Were we, as a government entity taken advantage of? The cost doesn’t match the end product and we need to know why.
Hunting season is now underway and for the first time, hunters as young as 12 and 13 can head into the woods as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult. Data has proven that it is safe, and I am thankful many children and parents can enjoy a great bonding experience.
October is also Italian-American heritage month. I’m very proud of my Italian upbringing and celebrate the many contributions of those who came before us.
I was pleased to recognize Stephanie Speaker as Erie County’s Citizen of the Month for September. Stephanie is a long-time advocate for people with disabilities and has succeeded in getting multiple bills passed to better help those with challenges. She is also a longtime volunteer with meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross.
October is breast cancer awareness month. Please be sure to get your mammograms.
