Legislator Todaro's November 2025 Bee Column

The Erie County Legislature heard from all the department heads last week about the proposed budget for 2026. Earlier this week members of the public had an opportunity to voice their opinions and make requests for 2026 funding. The public hearings always help inform our decisions as we prepare amendments to the County Executive’s spending plan. One thing is certain; we must rein in the Poloncarz Administration’s desire to continue growing county government. As the Erie County Comptroller’s office pointed out, Mark Poloncarz has increased spending by $704 million since 2021, projected future budget gaps continue to widen, as have salary costs. It is somewhat ironic that the County Executive characterizes future budgets as “dead flowers and arsenic” when his desire to keep adding jobs and expenses led us to this. If we don’t want a repeat of the red/green budget crisis of twenty years ago, then the Administration needs to practice responsible budgeting, otherwise the next County Executive will be burdened with the mistakes made by this one.

I am glad that Albany has paused implementation of the All-Electric Buildings Act. However, now they must move for a full repeal. Pushing all electric on a state where the grid can’t handle it puts lives at risk. Not to mention, there are many older homes in Western New York that rely on gas heat and gas stoves. Energy choice needs to exist so that Erie County residents, and all residents of the state, can feel safe. We risk their safety and security when irresponsible and unattainable policies are put in place. I will never support a one size fits all approach.

I was also happy to approve a resolution from the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services that authorizes the acceptance of $75,000 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of the Department of Homeland Security. This money will go towards efforts to recruit volunteer firefighters.

Hunting season is underway. I encourage all hunters to be careful and watch for others. I’m hoping you have decent weather as you head into the woods.

We are also approaching the holiday season. I hope it’s a time you can share with those close to you. It is also a good time to check in on those who might be without loved ones. Remember that not everyone has the good fortune of being surrounded by family and friends, and the holidays can be lonely for some. Welcoming them to your dinner table, or even just a quick visit can go a long way to lifting their spirits. Happy Thanksgiving.
