Legislator Greene urges City of Buffalo to show support for Ukraine and terminate Sister Cities relationship with Tver, Russia

In a letter to Mayor Byron Brown, Erie County Legislator Chris Greene is requesting the City of Buffalo terminate its Sister Cities relationship with Tver, Russia and reaffirm Sister Cities relationships with Drohobych, Ukraine and Horlivka, Ukraine.

The Sister Cities program links similarly sized municipalities and since the Russian invasion on Ukraine two weeks ago, several U.S. cities have chosen to cut ties with their Russian counterparts. Since 1989, the City of Buffalo has had a relationship with Tver, Russia, which is located outside of Moscow.

Legislator Greene said, “The City of Buffalo has no business being in a sister city relationship with Russia in light of recent events. Cities like Chicago and Charlotte have ended their relationship with Russian cities and we should follow suit. The people of Ukraine deserve our support. Slava Ukraini!”
