FUNDING APPROVED TO ENSURE MOTORIST AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

Erie County Legislator Chris Greene announced that the legislature has approved funding to conduct safety inspections of various culverts and bridges across Erie County.  The Department of Public Works is entering into an agreement with the design firm Popli Design Group to conduct these inspections and document their condition.  The large culverts and small bridges are inspected on a 4-year cycle while the pedestrian bridges are inspected on a 2-year cycle.

“As we all know, our infrastructure takes a beating with our Western New York weather.  We have to make sure the roads and bridges being used by Erie County residents are safe.  Having regular inspections will ensure that needed repairs are made,” said Legislator Chris Greene.

Erie County has 486 large culvert/small bridges and 11 pedestrian bridges. These structures are not inspected as part of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Bridge Inspection Program.  Therefore, the Erie County Department of Public Works established its own inspection program.  These inspections make it easier to prioritize repairs and replacements.
