With boating season in full swing around western New York, it’s a good time to remind boaters of New York State’s laws and regulations on the water.
In order to operate a motorboat on this region’s many lakes and waterways, you must be at least ten years old and have completed a boating safety course. It is important to carry the certificate of proof with you, unless it is marked on your DMV issued ID.
If you were born after January 1, 1978 you will need the boating safety certification by January 1, 2024. As of January 1, 2025, all operators of motorized boats or PWCs in New York will need to be certified. However, no one under the age of 14 may operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC).
All pleasure vessels, whether powered or non-powered, must have at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable personal flotation device (PFD), or life jacket, that is the correct size for every person on board. Any one operating or riding on a personal watercraft must wear a personal flotation device.
“Nothing beats a western New York summer. It’s a busy time for boaters. Let’s keep everyone safe while having fun. Be mindful of the rules, and enjoy a safe, fun season on the water,” said Erie County Legislator Chris Greene.
