With winter behind us, we have officially entered WNY’s other season, construction. The much-anticipated resurfacing of the 4.7-mile stretch of Greiner Road from Eastern Hills Church to Salt Road is underway. Erie County was originally hoping to complete this section in 2025, but with needed upgrades to the water lines beneath the road last summer, it was necessary to allow time for the displaced portions of the road to settle. The crews are working quickly, and I anticipate this will be completed shortly.
Additional resurfacing projects include Roll Road from Goodrich Road to Shimerville Road, Thompson Road from Clarence Center Road to Roll Road, all of Stahley Road and Tonawanda Creek Road in Amherst from Hopkins Road to Transit Road. Erie County will also be performing oil and chip resurfacing on Salt Road from County Road to Rapids Road, and all of Schurr Road.
While I understand that sometimes this roadwork can create temporary inconveniences, the short construction season means that we need to do as much work as possible while the asphalt plants are active. Last year, Erie County was able to complete several early-season projects ahead of schedule and below budget, which allowed the section of Wehrle from Harris Hill Road to Transit Road to be to be resurfaced later in the season, even though it was not originally scheduled.
Last winter’s freeze/thaw cycles were exceptionally bad, and many additional roads are showing signs of premature degradation. In negotiations with the County Executive in May, we agreed to an additional $5 million from the 2025 budget surplus be directed to additional highway work beyond the allocated 2026 highway budget. No specific road work projects have been announced. It is difficult for me to know the condition of every road throughout the district, and I can use assistance from the public. This year America is celebrating its 250th birthday, and with that comes some special celebrations. Fireworks in the Park is scheduled for Monday, June 29th, from 4:00PM until dusk at Clarence Town Park on Main Street. There will be concessions, face painting, yard games, inflatables, music and plenty of family-friendly entertainment. This will all lead up to fireworks at dusk. The rain date is Tuesday, June 30th. Be sure to bring a blanket and/or a lawn chair to help celebrate 250 years.
The Clarence Concert Association is marking its 68th annual free summer concert series with this year’s edition kicking off on June 28th. Some of this year’s shows include the Clarence Summer Orchestra, the Queen City Strings, the Buffalo Bluegrass All Stars, the Anderson Big Band, Shakespeare in the Park, and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. In honor of America at 250, the July 5th program will include a salute to the American armed forces. In the event of rain, outdoor concerts will be moved to the Clarence High School Auditorium.
