Erie County Department of Central Police Services Joins Counterparts Nationwide to Honor and Recognize 911 Call Takers
National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is celebrated from April 14 – 22, 2024
ERIE COUNTY, NY— This week the Erie County Department of Central Police Services along with their counterparts throughout the nation will be participating in National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, an annual event held each April to honor and recognize 911 call takers for their dedication and service to the public during some of the most difficult moments in a person’s life. These dedicated professionals play a key role in ensuring public safety across Erie County by answering emergency calls and dispatching police, fire, and EMS services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“911 call takers are on the front lines every day, helping people who may be going through the worst moments of their lives and working with compassion and clarity to get help on the way,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “The work they do is often unnoticed but deserves recognition and celebration. On behalf of all Erie County residents, I thank them for the lifesaving work they do, every day.”
In 2023, the Erie County 911 Center processed 789,218 calls and 4,911 texts-to-911. Countywide, the 911 Public Safety Answering Points handled a total of over 1.6 million calls.
“911 telecommunicators are considered the first First Responders, supplying the vital link between citizens who need help and the police officers, fire fighters and EMS personnel who come to their aid. 911 telecommunicators man our centers 24 hours a day, diligently working to provide service with dignity and professionalism,” added Marlaine Hoffman, Interim Commissioner of Central Police Services.
