The Erie County Personnel Department has officially announced the upcoming civil service examinations for individuals seeking to become a Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff - Criminal. The written examination is scheduled for October 17, 2026, with an application deadline of September 2, 2026.
While the written tests for both tracks are identical and taken at the same time, they will result in different civil service lists. The Deputy Sheriff - Criminal exam allows successful candidates to be hired by the Erie County Sheriff's Office, while the Police Officer exam lets candidates be hired by town or village police departments across the county. Individuals interested in being considered for both career paths must sign up for both exams. There is a $30 application fee for each.
"This written examination is the starting point for candidates interested in protecting our communities in a law enforcement role," said Dr. Brian Bray, Erie County Personnel Department Commissioner. "If successful on the written examination, candidates must later pass a physical agility exam administered by the Personnel Department that includes push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. If reachable on the civil service list, candidates will then undergo a thorough background investigation and psychological evaluation by the hiring police agency. This thorough process helps ensure that the men and women joining our law enforcement agencies can serve our community with honor, dedication, and distinction.”
Qualifications:
Candidates must be at least 19 years old on or before the examination date of October 17, 2026. While candidates are permitted to sit for the written test at age 19, they are not eligible for appointment until their 21st birthday. The maximum age limit for candidates has been increased, and candidates can now apply up until their 43rd birthday.
To qualify for the examination, candidates must be United States citizens, hold a valid New York State driver's license, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent, combined with one of the following:
• 60 college credits, OR
• 30 college credits plus 1 year of military service, OR
• An equivalent acceptable combination of education and service.
Note: Current students are eligible to take the exam now and complete their required college credits prior to official appointment.
How to Apply:
Prospective candidates are strongly urged to review the full, official exam announcements for a complete breakdown of medical, psychological, and background requirements. Applications must be completed and submitted by September 2.
Fee Waiver Notice: The $30 application fee for each exam can be waived for candidates who are currently unemployed, receiving public assistance, or enrolled in specific job training programs. Proper documentation must be submitted with the application.
