ERIE COUNTY, NY— Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz today announced that Erie County will be joining a group of leaders representing the eight municipalities bordering lakes Erie and Ontario, the “Niagara 8.” Along with the elected leaders of the City of Buffalo; the City of Niagara Falls; Niagara County; the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario; the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario; the Town of Fort Erie, Ontario; and the Town of Niagara-On-The Lake, Ontario, Poloncarz co-signed a letter outlining the group’s deep concern with the real-world economic consequences of the tariffs but also underscoring the longtime, deep ties between the United States and Canada.
“I recently asked my partners in government on both sides of the border to convene the ‘Niagara 8’ group, which better positions us to collaboratively tackle challenges and build upon our strengths,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “Western New York and Southern Ontario have a rich, interconnected history and we remain committed partners and neighbors, regardless of the climate in Washington or Ottawa.”
$2.5 billion (US dollars) worth of goods cross the Canadian - American border each day and $6 billion in lumber and wood products for the US homebuilding industry came from Canada in 2024. Moreover, fully 70% of all Canadian imports to the US are used to manufacture other US-made products.
