Events in September, October to Help You Clean Out Your Basement and Garage
ERIE COUNTY, NY— The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning (“ECDEP”) has announced three waste collection events taking place in September and October for all Erie County residents.
Registration is now open for the two September collections, both in the City of Buffalo:
- a Paint-Only collection on September 13th, and
- a Household Hazardous Waste (“HHW”), Paint, and Battery collection on September 27th.
A Paint-Only collection will also be held on October 18th in the Town of Hamburg with registration opening 30 days prior.
Registration can be completed by making an online reservation at www.erie.gov/recycling or by calling the HHW Information Line at (716) 858-6800. Appointments are limited and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. The exact location is provided upon registration to avoid creating long wait times by those who would show up without a reservation.
The September 13th Paint-Only collection is co-sponsored by Greensheen and Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes. Greensheen makes eco-friendly paint from recycled paint collected across New York State. The following materials will be accepted at Paint-Only collections: latex, oil-based and acrylic paint, stains, shellacs, lacquers, sealers, varnishes, and urethanes. There is no limit to the number of materials you can bring to the paint-only collections and businesses are also welcome to participate. Please note, no other household hazardous waste will be collected at the 9/13 and 10/18 Paint-Only collection events.
The City of Buffalo is partnering with Erie County to provide site and staffing assistance for the HHW, Paint, and Battery collection event being held on September 27th. At this event, residents can properly dispose of many types of hazardous household materials such as most household chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline, all types of paints, and batteries. These products have labels that indicate they are toxic, flammable, or explosive. A complete list of acceptable materials is available at www.erie.gov/hhw.
Residents unable to attend these collection events can utilize the year-round option of the County’s HHW Voucher Drop-off Program that allows residents to register to bring up to 50 pounds of eligible hazardous waste to a private facility in Tonawanda at no cost.
They also accept all paints and associated materials as noted above. Pre-registration for that service is required and can be done either by visiting www.erie.gov/recycling or by calling (716) 998-8073.
Support for these collection programs is also provided by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, the City of Buffalo, Northeast Southtowns Solid Waste Management Board, Northwest Communities Solid Waste Management Board, Greensheen, and Paintcare.
