To help residents properly dispose of items from their spring cleaning, the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning is joining with partners to offer two free waste collection events in May.
A paint & battery collection is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 in Williamsville and a Household Hazardous Waste (“HHW”) collection is slated to be held in the City of Buffalo on Saturday, May 30. Both events will be free, but registration is required and the specific locations will not be provided until registrants are signed up in order to help keep waiting times reasonable.
The May 9 collection event in Williamsville will focus on two common and specific wastes, paint and batteries. Please note, lead-acid batteries (car batteries) will not be accepted. Along with latex and oil-based paints, we will accept stains, shellacs, lacquers, sealers, varnishes, and urethanes at this event.
The HHW collection event on May 30 will be held in partnership with the City of Buffalo. HHW includes household cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, kerosine, gasoline, and fertilizers, as well as paint and batteries. A complete list of acceptable materials is available at www.erie.gov/recycling .
Appointments are limited and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. They can made by visiting www.erie.gov/recycling or by calling the collection event information line at (716) 858-6800. Registration opens 30 days prior to each event.
If residents can’t make a collection event, they can utilize the year-round option of the County’s HHW Voucher Drop-off Program that allows residents to register to bring up to 50 pounds of eligible household hazardous waste to a private facility in Tonawanda at no cost. The facility also accepts most paints at no charge. Registration for that service can be done either by visiting www.erie.gov/recycling or by calling Hazman at (716) 998-8073.
Support for these collection programs is also provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, City of Buffalo, Northwest Communities Solid Waste Board, New York State Senator Jeremy Zellner, SUNY Erie North and GreenSheen.
Additional collection events will be scheduled for later this year, including sites located in the Southtowns.
