Acquired Over the Years Through In Rem Process, Property Will Be Used Solely for Public Recreation
ERIE COUNTY, NY— Erie County has announced the upcoming conveyance of 102 parcels of county-owned land in Hamburg to the Town of Hamburg, removing them from the county’s land inventory and transferring them to the Town. Acquired by the county over the years through In Rem proceedings, the parcels are primarily grouped together in areas where streets were never developed. While not all the parcels are contiguous to each other, the total acreage to be conveyed is 9.8 acres.
“These small, forgotten parcels are a relic of a bygone time, planned around streets that were never constructed and then left fallow as development moved elsewhere. They have accumulated and languished on the county’s books for years, but this conveyance will bring new life to them,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “Under this agreement these properties will be used solely for public recreation purposes for Erie County residents, so now these disused parcels will collectively become new green spaces for the public to enjoy nature. This removes these properties from the county’s books and creates new green space in Hamburg, which is a win for all. I thank Town of Hamburg officials for working on this with us and for agreeing to this conveyance and I look forward to the next steps for this land.”
The County Lands Advisory Review Committee contacted the Town of Hamburg Planning Department to begin the process and determine if the Town was willing to accept the conveyance. The 102 lots have a Full Market Value of approximately $125,000 but are being conveyed specifically under the condition that the property will be used solely for public recreation purposes for all Erie County residents. The Real Estate Division of Erie County’s Real Property Tax Services Department is handling and finalizing the closing of this transaction, with an expected closing date within a few weeks.
