JOB OPENING:

Animal Control Department
Dog Control Officer PT 

Distinguishing Features of the Class:  The work involves patrolling the municipality in search of unlicensed dogs and impounding them. The incumbent assists in taking a yearly dog census and maintains records of all the persons in the municipality owning or harboring dogs. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Town Supervisor or Mayor. Supervision may be exercised over a stall staff of subordinate employees. Does related work as required. 

Typical Work Activities:  Ascertains and lists the names of all persons in the municipality owning or harboring dogs. Picks up stray dogs, either licensed or unlicensed.  Cares for and shelters seized dogs.  Maintains records, as required by the State of New York, on dog enforcement and control.  Enforces the provisions of the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law pertaining to dog control, with the power of a peace officer.  May handle injured animal and/or wildlife complaints.  May utilize a pistol, tranquilizing gun, baton, net, traps or other defensive instruments in performing duties. 

 Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:  Good knowledge of the geography of the community; ability to drive an automobile; ability to handle dogs; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

Minimum Qualifications:  Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, or any equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work. 

Special Requirement:  Must possess New York State Operator's license. 

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
