The Village of Akron has three parks located within its one and one-half square mile boundary. Two of the three parks are owned and maintained by the Village's Department of Public Works and one by the Erie County's Parks Department.
Russell Park
In the center of the "downtown" area of Akron is a parcel of land bordered by Main, Clinton, John and Church Streets that was donated to the Village on September 27, 1852. The area is to be used as a "Public Square" in perpetuity. Ansel Russell and his wife, Barbary, gave this park to the Village.
Today this fine park is used for many purposes including Fourth of July observances, Akron Band concerts in July and August, community affairs and sing-a-longs, a New Year's Eve Ball drop and many other celebrations. There is also within the park the Dr. Ernest Moser playground, war memorial monuments, a gazebo and benches for listening to concerts and leisure. There are trees older than the Village itself. It is a wonderful park that is enjoyed by all.
Wilder Park
Wilder Park is located at the corners of Hoag and Bloomingdale Avenues and a smaller park than Russell Park. This area was also donated to the Village to be used solely as a park forever. Horace A. Wilder and his wife, Mattie, gave this parcel of land. Wilder Park has benches and a Naval cannon. Mostly children for games and recreation use it.
Akron Falls Park
This large park, well over 120 acres, is owned and operated by Erie County. Much of this park runs parallel with Murder Creek. Within its boundaries are areas for picnicking, nature trails, a lighted ice skating rink in winter, soccer fields and baseball diamonds.
The Akron Soccer League plays and practices on fields within the park during the spring and fall months. This area is located just off Skyline Drive. The park is highlighted and named for Akron Falls, a cataract that drops for ninety feet. The water is especially spectacular during the spring thaw season.
