Jacqueline Hoak: retired from the field of education in 2019 after serving in a variety of levels of education from middle school to college. While raising four children, she worked for twelve years in her and her husband’s family restaurant. In 1989, she returned to the teaching profession, which led to instruction for adults through Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES. There she initiated a program titled GRASP, Giving Rural Adults a Study Program, which used the library system for GED candidates to pick up and drop off study packets in preparation for the exam. She also wrote and received a grant for underserved women, which funded Project Dignity. This program provided culturally appropriate training for eligible Seneca women to obtain skills to enter the work force. Jacqueline left BOCES to pursue serving Native American students as the Native American Services Coordinator for Buffalo State College and later as the Curriculum Specialist at the Buffalo Native American Magnet School.
Before retiring from the New York State Education system, she served as an elementary school principal and later as the Assistant Superintendent of the Dunkirk City School District. Her career finally ended after eleven years of teaching middle school English in Las Vegas, Nevada. The highlight of her retirement is spending time with her 11 grandchildren and her great-granddaughter, serving as a member of the Hamburg Coalition for Equity and Inclusion, and hanging out at the library.
