Legislator Todaro January 2023 Bee column

The New Year always brings with it the promise of new beginnings. As the Erie County Legislature reconvenes, I look forward to working with my colleagues again this year, continuing to advocate for my constituents.  As always, I will fight against any tax increases, and where possible push to lower taxes, provided that doesn’t impact the services you expect and deserve.

Last year was challenging and trying for so many, ending in a deadly and devastating blizzard.  I wanted to thank the many first responders, volunteers and those who worked to keep our community safe during that time.  When the storm pounded our region so many of you asked, ‘how can I help,’ and went about digging out stranded motorists, reaching those without heat in their homes, and getting food to those unable to access basic goods and services.  Many of these first responders helped to save lives, and the volunteers often risked their own safety, using their personal plows, snowmobiles, and other equipment to serve others.  The impact of this storm highlighted the necessity for improvements.  It also demonstrated that many of these volunteers, snowmobile clubs, and others bring with them a level of expertise vital to the conversation on how best to prepare for a future storm.  As horrific as this blizzard was, the loss of life would likely have been far worse without them.  Their input is very important as Erie County takes steps to keep residents safe, and I am grateful for their efforts.

One of the lessons learned from this storm was the need for myriad energy sources.  Governor Hochul’s proposal to phase out natural gas appliances, just weeks after so many went days without power and many lives were lost, is completely tone deaf. The grid was practically non-existent during the blizzard.  In fact, many survived thanks to their gas fireplaces and stoves.  We cannot be so reliant on electric power, and the Governor’s proposal that we rid ourselves of fossil fuel heating equipment is disastrous. I will continue to push for more realistic energy proposals, ones that include electric, wind, solar and fossil fuels, as I believe this is the best way to ensure the safety and well-being of Erie County residents.

Lastly, I was proud to secure funding in the 2023 budget for so many organizations that do great work in the district.  Those entities include our local Chambers of Commerce that do a terrific job promoting local businesses, the Boys and Girls Clubs and Youth Bureau that provide so many activities and growth opportunities for our young people, the Village of Alden, and the VFW and American Legion Posts, which continue to serve those that sacrificed so much for our country.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.  Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2023.
