Inquiry follows revelations fluoride was not added to City of Buffalo water
Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro wants to ensure that water provided by the Erie County Water Authority is meeting the high standards expected for his constituents. He has sent a letter to the Chief Operating Officer of the ECWA requesting the water quality report for 2022 and is seeking more information about the regulatory process.
The request from Legislator Todaro follows recent revelations that the City of Buffalo’s Water Authority has not added fluoride to the water delivered to city residents for nearly 8 years. The City of Buffalo Water Authority operates separately from the Erie County Water Authority.
“It was extremely disturbing to discover that there was a failure on many levels for city residents. How did this go unnoticed for eight years,” asked Legislator Todaro. The lawmaker stressed that there is no indication the Erie County Water Authority made any errors that would impact county water supply, but he wants to ensure measures are in place to prevent similar failures from happening to the drinking supply of those he represents.
“The Erie County Water Authority has been very transparent. They typically post their annual water quality report on-line to read. I want to be able to review that report for 2022 and learn a bit more about the oversight process so my constituents can continue to trust the water supply being delivered to their homes and businesses,” said Legislator Todaro. “I also want to know what role, if any, the Erie County Health Department plays in monitoring both the city and county water supply.”
The ECWA is not a county agency and operates independently of Erie County government.
