LEGISLATOR MILLS HONORS VOLUNTEERS FOR HEROISM IN BLIZZARD

Thanks volunteers for their lifesaving efforts

Erie County Legislator John Mills (11th District) honored the heroic efforts of the many volunteers who stepped up to save people during the December blizzard at a recent session of the Erie County Legislature.

“Some people were trying to get home from work, others were trying to reach loved ones in need, and there were some stuck in their homes with no heat.  The blizzard made it impossible to reach them.  That’s when the snowmobile clubs stepped up and stepped in to help.  No question they saved lives,” said Minority Leader Mills.

Legislator Mills was joined by his colleagues in the Republican caucus Thursday, January 19, 2023 in presenting a proclamation to the Erie County Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.  Club members used their own snowmobiles, Sno-Cat groomers and ATVs to help rescue people trapped in their vehicles, transport essential workers and assist so many more who were stranded without power.  “Even emergency vehicles struggled to get through the storm.  These snowmobile club members brought their equipment and their knowledge on how best to make it through blinding winds and deep snow,” said Mills.

More than 40 lives were lost in the storm.  Legislator Mills said as tragic as that is, without the heroic work of these volunteers, the toll would have been far greater.

“They risked their own safety to help others.  Our community is forever appreciative of their efforts,” said Legislator Mills.
