Legislator Mills April 2026 Bee Column

The recent spike in gasoline prices because of the armed conflict in Iran has created challenges for many Erie County residents.  As a result, I joined my Republican colleagues in introducing a measure that would provide some relief at the pump.  By capping Erie County’s tax on gasoline, taxpayers will be able to keep a few more dollars in their pockets.  This measure would be implemented beginning June 1, 2026, and continue indefinitely unless rescinded by resolution of the County Legislature. It is the right thing to do.

As work continues at the new Buffalo Bills stadium site, I maintain that having sidewalks would significantly reduce the inherent risks of walking where there are crowds of people and a steady stream of vehicles.  I hope that these steps can be taken to make the area safer for Bills fans.

We are making some progress with the youth hunting measure.  The Erie County Legislature previously approved the bill, but the Erie County Executive vetoed it, citing safety concerns.  The Department of Environmental Conservation says since the law has been implemented in all other New York State counties (except Erie and Rockland) there have been zero incidents.  This is a great opportunity for parents to hunt with their children, and it’s a positive way for those 12- and 13-year-old hunters to gain valuable experience while with their mothers, fathers, or adult supervisor.  Mark Poloncarz has indicated he still plans to veto the measure.  Why? The DEC stated there have been no issues.  He should not allow his personal feelings on hunting to interfere with a program that has proven to be safe.

The investigation continues into the Seneca Babcock Community Association.  New York State Attorney General Letitia James concluded there was no wrongdoing without even an investigation.  This is wrong on every level.  There is no clear accounting for taxpayer and private donor dollars, and non-profit filings weren’t done with consistency.

The suggestion by the Erie County Comptroller for Erie County to help the City of Buffalo bail out of its financial mess is misguided.  The County is facing its own fiscal challenges.  The issues facing Buffalo were created by their leadership and as such, they need to map out a best way forward.  While Erie County does spend significantly in the suburbs on infrastructure issues, the county also commits millions to Buffalo in social services and programs.  With responsible leadership, the City and County can return to better financial footing. But to do so, the County Executive and Mayor of Buffalo need to rein in spending.  It is both their responsibility and the right thing to do.

I hope everyone had a joyous Easter holiday and were able to spend it with those you love.  For our Jewish friends, I wish you all a Happy Passover.  I’m hoping the days of reliable good weather will soon be here.
