In 2024, Erie County government joined forces with a dozen other organizations to qualify as a HEARTSafe community through the Citizen CPR Foundation program. This national recognition highlights efforts to improve heart health and emergency response by promoting CPR training, increasing access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and fostering public awareness.
In May 2025, Erie County announced that it had earned the HEARTSafe designation, meeting 13 essential benchmarks, including a year-long effort to educate more than 15% of county residents – about 147,000 people - in hands-only CPR. Other criteria were related to increasing access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs), strengthening 911 dispatcher protocols, and building a system of rapid response supported by community partners, schools, local organizations and emergency medical services (EMS).
Erie County aims to enhance our community’s ability to respond swiftly to sudden cardiac emergencies. The HEARTSafe designation reflects a commitment to saving lives through effective preparation, making Erie County a safer place for residents and visitors alike. This initiative aligns with the mission of improving overall cardiovascular health and ensuring rapid, effective action in times of need.
