Legislator Greene February 2023 Bee column

It’s been a tough winter, but the days are getting longer, and Spring is just a month away. Hopefully, the worst is behind us. Based on the numerous emails I received, I know many of you relied on your natural gas stoves and appliances to keep you warm during the blizzard.  The Christmas storm highlighted the fact that we cannot be solely reliant on electricity.  I sponsored a resolution opposing Governor Hochul’s proposal that would outlaw the sale of gas stoves and fireplaces.  That resolution passed unanimously in the legislature, and now several towns are taking similar stances.   I have started a petition to let Albany know this is wrong and dangerous.  If you are also opposed to the gas appliance ban you can find the link to the petition on my Legislator Chris Greene Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/LegislatorChrisGreene

The good work of volunteer firefighters was also on display during the blizzard.  My colleagues and I recognize their good work and commitment to our community.  I also understand there are many challenges in recruiting new members.  I have introduced a new local law that would provide some tax relief for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.  The local law exempts up to 10% of the assessed value of their primary residence.  To be eligible the members must have served a minimum of two years, live in the community served by the district, and the residential property is in the district in which they serve.  That legislation is currently in committee.  While I don’t believe that this law will solve the shortage of volunteer firefighters, it is a step in the right direction and an important piece to the solution.

We continue to move forward with the new Bills stadium negotiations.  New York State has completed the environmental quality review for the new site. Before construction gets underway, I want to ensure the Community Benefits Agreement is, in fact, beneficial for our region.  Since the team’s inception in 1960, this community has supported the Buffalo Bills through good times and bad.  I want to be certain that commitment is respected.

While the Erie County Legislature is waiting to receive the final agreement with the Buffalo Bills, one aspect that concerns me is the luxury suite that will be provided to Erie County. While the County Executive has assured me that this suite will be used exclusively for economic development (entertaining companies who are considering expanding in or relocating to Erie County) and non-profit organizations, there exists the real potential for abuse or mismanagement over the next 30 years.  For that reason, I will be crafting a resolution that will direct all current and future County Executives to issue detailed reports regarding who is using these seats and what role they play in the economic expansion of Erie County.

I wanted to remind our senior citizens that you may be eligible for tax exemptions.  You have until March 1, 2023, to apply for those exemptions.  Also, seniors in need of home heating help can call New York Connects at (716)-858-8526.

While we eagerly await the warmer temperatures, there is still plenty to enjoy about our winter season. Be sure to check out Akron Falls and the many great Erie County parks.
