$500,000 Erie County Cultural Capital Grant Aids in Renovations to Historic Theater
$2 million project reconstructs former sanctuary/theater space, improves accessibility
ERIE COUNTY, NY— The Springville Center for the Arts, a rural multi-arts center with theater, exhibit, workshop, and concert programs, is enjoying vibrant new life following the completion of a significant reconstruction and renovation project partly funded through an Erie County Cultural Capital grant. The grant of $500,000 was utilized to reconstruct the former sanctuary/theater space at the Center to improve accessibility, seating, backstage space, and technical capacity. Work also included the installation of a heat pump and HVAC units, piping steel work, and outside window trim. The total project cost was $2.06 million.
“Erie County Cultural Capital grants are energizing organizations countywide and making renovations happen that might not have been possible otherwise. Agencies and organizations of all sizes have received grants that strengthen their operations, solidify their place in our community and enhance the services they provide,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “These grants are helping to promote and preserve our cultural attractions countywide, ensuring that they remain robust today and into the future.”
Poloncarz was joined today at the Center by Executive Director Seth Wochensky, SCA Board Chairs Chloe Krouse and Jon Horton along with other center staff, and Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Environment and Planning Thomas Baines and departmental personnel to review the improvements at the Center. The Center’s main facility, an 1869 church, saw renovations including the construction of a new entrance.
SCA Board Chair Jon Horton said, “Good things happen when our County partners with community-based organizations like the Springville Center for the Arts. County funding plus local contractors and dedicated volunteers has resulted in this beautifully restored facility that serves the people of Springville and the surrounding towns. We value this partnership and are grateful to our friends in the Erie County government.”
