REPUBLICAN LEGISLATORS SUPPORT DISABLED VETERANS

Erie County, NY – Erie County Legislators passed a local law that will authorize a one-hundred percent real property tax exemption on the primary residence of seriously disabled veterans.  In order to qualify a veteran must have suffered a debilitating injury in performance of their service to our nation, were discharged or released from active military under honorable conditions.  They are considered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to be permanently and totally disabled as a result of their military service as evidenced by letter, official form, or other document sent to said veteran from such department that specifically states the veteran is considered to be permanently and totally disabled as a result of their service.

“This is an important piece of legislation, and I am proud to support this measure that hopefully gives our disabled veterans some peace of mind,” said Minority Leader and Erie County Legislator John Mills.

“These men and women have sacrificed and that has resulted in lifelong disabilities.  I feel this is a start and is absolutely necessary” said Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro.

“I’m grateful to all those who serve and am proud to support this much needed legislation,” said Erie County Legislator Chris Greene.

“Our community has many veterans who risked their lives in service to our country.  As a result of their sacrifices, they are left with lifelong challenges.  Providing this tax exemption is the least we can do,” said Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo.

The measure, which provides the tax exemption to one hundred percent disabled veterans as determined by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, passed unanimously.  The 100 percent exemption will take effect on future tax bills.  You must verify your eligibility through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and your local municipal tax assessor’s office.
