LEGISLATOR TODARO ANNOUNCES IMMINENT SALE OF FORMER ERIE COUNTY HOME

Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro announces the long-shuttered Erie County Home and property, located at 11580 Walden Avenue in Alden, NY has a buyer in place.  The facility closed its doors for good with the opening of the Terrace View Long-Term Care Facility in 2013 on the grounds of ECMC.  Staff and residents were relocated to that facility, effectively eliminating the need for the Erie County Home.

“It has long been an eyesore and a source of frustration, not only for Alden residents, but also for Erie County.  We had this massive complex sitting empty with little to no interest.  At last, there is a buyer in place who will clean up the property and get it back on the tax rolls,” said Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro.

A study completed in 2013 recommended the county sell the property or demolish the buildings and sell the land.  The main structure is 650,000 square feet, with four other buildings also on the site, which sits on 152 acres.  The then-Erie County Board of Supervisors approved construction of the Erie County Home in 1928.  The facility was built on land that had been donated by the Wende family and was for people who needed care but were without the financial resources to pay for that care.

“This is great news for Erie County as well as the Town of Alden.  It is long overdue.  I’m hoping we can move this Local Law quickly so that the sale can be completed and the new owner can take custody of the property and proceed with their plans,” said Legislator Todaro.  The measure passed 11-0.
