Legislator Mills sponsors unanimously-supported law to cut property taxes for veterans in Erie County

Erie County Legislator John Mills sponsored a new local law to increase property tax exemptions for veterans in Erie County. This law was passed during the most recent session of the legislature and will update an existing law from 1997 that set the property tax exemption limits for veterans. The new limits will be $30,000, $20,000 and $100,000 which is a substantial increase from the previous limits.

Legislator Mills said, “This change in the property tax exemptions for our veterans has been long overdue. Especially with our current economy, we need to continue to find tax relief for our residents in any way possible. This law was common sense and I’m proud to have sponsored and voted to pass it.”

The new law will take effect immediately upon being filed with the Secretary of State. The previous limits were $18,000, $12,000 and $60,000 which equates to a 67% increase. This law was also sponsored by Legislators Lorigo, Todaro and Greene and was passed unanimously. The law can be viewed here.
