FUNDING APPROVED TO ENSURE MOTORIST AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

Minority Leader and Erie County Legislator John Mills announced that the legislature has approved funding to conduct safety inspections of various culverts and bridges across Erie County.  The Department of Public Works is entering into an agreement with the design firm Popli Design Group to conduct these inspections and document their condition.  The large culverts and small bridges are inspected on a 4-year cycle while the pedestrian bridges are inspected on a 2-year cycle.

“One of our most important functions in county government is to take proper care of our infrastructure.  Those roads and bridges need to be properly maintained for the safety of all residents. These inspections will make sure that happens,” said Erie County Legislator John Mills.

Erie County has 486 large culvert/small bridges and 11 pedestrian bridges. These structures are not inspected as part of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Bridge Inspection Program.  Therefore, the Erie County Department of Public Works established its own inspection program.  These inspections make it easier to prioritize repairs and replacements.
