As the Erie County Legislature returns from the August recess, we will be dealing with questions on how Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz plans to deal with a projected $22.5 million sales tax revenue shortfall this year. This comes while he continues to grow county government. As the fiscal house it is our responsibility to hold the Administration’s feet to the fire on spending. With a budget now double the size from when he took office, Mark Poloncarz must find places to cut, and County Comptroller Hardwick should present some recommendations.
I often spend the August recess touring the many communities I represent, hearing from residents, meeting with local leaders, and discussing issues where I can be of assistance. One of those stops along the way included attending an Eagle Scout ceremony in Eden. I am always impressed with the leadership skills these Eagle Scouts exhibit. It was also my great honor to present a proclamation to Valerie Adams who was visiting her grandparents in the Town of Boston when a fire broke out at a home nearby. Valerie rescued an elderly man from the home, saving his life.
Fentanyl has made its way into our communities, taking the lives of so many who are struggling with addiction. I have worked with the Collins Fire Department to discuss ways they can better prepare for incidents involving fentanyl exposure. First responders also face significant risk when answering calls related to fentanyl.
I recently toured the Providence Farm Collective in Orchard Park. It is an extraordinary effort by the refugee population to farm the land. They even donate some of what they grow to area food pantries. A new facility is being constructed on the property. The PFC grew from the Somali Bantu Community Farm, which was a 3-year pilot launched in 2017 to address inequities in farmland and fresh food access. They’ve grown considerably since that time, and their operation is impressive. To learn more, go to www.Providencefarmcollective.org
It was my honor to join Congressman Nick Langworthy at a pinning ceremony for Vietnam veterans. We are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.
I’ve attended Orchard Park Town Board meetings as discussions continue regarding zoning issues related to the new stadium. Public input is important. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it is necessary to do our due diligence and ensure we get it right for the future of the town, as well as the larger community.
I was happy to speak at a recent rally with Citizens Against Wind Turbines In Lake Erie. The great lakes are our greatest asset, and we must do everything in our power to protect them. We’ve been fighting against these turbines for 15 years. I will continue to advocate for our lakes.
I’m pleased to report that the Clarksburg bridge project is expected to be completed in October. I thank everyone for their patience. I’m also working with Erie County Highways to patch Webster Road and Old Chestnut Ridge Road.
I am wrapping up my village and town tour, with plans to attend upcoming meetings in the Village of Gowanda and the Town of Boston. As always, thank you for the honor of serving you.
