We held budget hearings last week on the County Executive’s proposed 2025 spending plan. We heard from commissioners and department heads, and earlier this week held a public hearing where non-profits, organizations and other agencies seeking county funding made their presentations to legislators. The budget put forth by Mark Poloncarz totals $1.96 billion, which is up nearly 1.4% from 2024. I am concerned with the spending practices of this Administration. Since he began proposing budgets, property taxes have gone up $83 million, and the budget itself has exploded, increasing almost 43%. That is unsustainable. Since Mark Poloncarz said he will not seek re-election, whoever the next County Executive will be will have to deal with a bloated budget and out-of-control costs. At a time when New York State, and most certainly Erie County, is losing more residents every year, we need to buckle down and work hard to ensure we are providing a climate where our next generations can afford to work, live, and stay.
I was encouraged by the voters rejecting Erie County Proposition One. I want to thank you for your support in saying no to a measure that would have limited your voice. The proposition would have done away with a public referendum on sales tax. We cannot and should not take away the checks and balances that are in place to ensure the government runs efficiently, every community in Erie County is properly represented in the process, and politicians don’t abuse power. The fact that more than 62% of voters agreed speaks volumes.
With the holiday season upon us, I am reminded that for many, this is not a joyous time. The pressures of providing a special Thanksgiving or Christmas can be overwhelming when the price of groceries and utilities have gone up, and people are struggling to get by. If you can help, there are numerous organizations that collect donations or gifts for those less fortunate. Please consider giving if you are able. If you find yourself needing some assistance this holiday, organizations like FeedMore, the Salvation Army, and numerous toy collection drives can assist you. We all can use some help now and then, and I encourage you to lean on those organizations that can alleviate some of that pressure.
Erie County hosts some events during the holiday season. Santa Land at Chestnut Ridge Park is an annual event enjoyed by many. Please come and join us on December 14 from 10am to 4pm. There will be haywagon rides, live animals, arts and crafts, food and much more. In addition, Santa will be paying a visit. Be sure to bring the little ones for a fun afternoon.
I wish you and your family well this holiday season. I hope your Thanksgiving table is filled with joy, laughter, and good food.
