Legislator Mills December 2023 Bee column

The year 2023 was an exciting one for Erie County.  Work got underway on the new home of the Buffalo Bills.  Millions in savings was realized after the Republican caucus negotiated an agreement to borrow less.  Our caucus worked to ensure a cut to the property tax levy for the first time in more than twenty years.  In addition, we are making important investments in the communities we serve.

Workers are continuing with building the foundation for the new stadium, pouring the concrete in anticipation of building out the steel frame, which should begin in early 2024. Considerable excavation work has already been completed.  The stone and debris that has been removed will be used to fill the hole left once the current stadium is demolished.  The massive project brings considerable work to local companies, employees, and the trades. Out-of-town contractors are also part of this massive project, all of which helps our economy.  Stadium ownership will belong to the state once completed.  We have saved considerably after our caucus negotiated with the Administration to pay more of Erie County’s stadium-related costs in cash.  We also used more in budget surplus for road projects, saving taxpayers millions in interest costs over time.

Investments are being made on highway and bridge projects, and we are holding the Administration accountable by requiring them to provide detailed roadwork plans well in advance so the communities impacted will know when the infrastructure work will be done.

The 2024 budget provides for a one-million-dollar reduction to the property tax levy.  With the two percent tax cap, it is anticipated we will save more than $80 million over the next decade.  In addition, by eliminating the county sales tax on home heating products from December through February, you will also see a savings in the cost to heat your home.

I’m pleased that we are finally seeing an agreement between Erie County and the snowmobile clubs of Western New York.  When the November storm and December blizzard hit our region hard last year, many snowmobile enthusiasts responded to emergencies.  Since that time, I have been calling for those clubs to have a seat at the table as we plan for future weather events.  They will now be a part of Erie County’s emergency plan.  I am grateful for the work they did in helping to save so many in the face of such a devastating storm and I know they will be an invaluable resource going forward.

I hope you have a safe and happy holiday season and wish you peace for 2024.  I am appreciative of this opportunity to serve you and am grateful for the neighbors, friends and constituents who work each day to make Erie County an exceptional place to live.
