Legislator Lorigo's October 2025 Bee Column

Work on the 2026 Erie County budget is now underway following County Executive Mark Poloncarz’s presentation of his spending plan this week. As required by the County Charter, his administration also submitted the Budget Revenues and Expenses Report, showing a proposed General Fund total of $2.081 billion with a 1.5% projected increase in sales tax growth.

There’s no question this administration has grown government spending significantly over the years, and I believe taxpayers deserve more accountability for how their dollars are used. The Legislature will now review the proposal, hold a public hearing, and offer amendments. My hope is that my colleagues across the aisle will agree that fiscal restraint and respect for taxpayers must remain top priorities.

Recently, I co-sponsored a resolution that passed unanimously in the Legislature supporting federal legislation to keep AM radio in vehicles. Several automakers have removed AM radio from electric vehicles, but here in Western New York, we know how critical AM radio can be during severe weather. When power lines, broadband, and cell towers fail, AM radio often remains the one reliable source for emergency information. Its emergency alert system has saved lives, and ensuring this service remains available has strong bipartisan support.

I also continue to advocate for the Energy Choice Act in Congress. During the Blizzard of 2022, natural gas kept homes warm and stoves working, and without it, the outcome could have been far worse. New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act imposes energy mandates that are overly aggressive and dangerous for regions like ours. Rushing to eliminate natural gas in favor of complete reliance on electricity, wind, and solar power is not only unrealistic, it puts lives at risk. We need balanced, diverse energy options to keep our residents safe and our economy strong.

This month, I held community office hours at the West Seneca Library and appreciate everyone who stopped by to share their concerns. I’ll be hosting my next session on October 28 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the East Aurora Library, and I encourage residents to join me. These meetings are invaluable in helping me understand the challenges facing our community.

I also recently toured the construction site of the new Buffalo Bills stadium in Orchard Park to see firsthand how work is progressing. It’s exciting to watch such a major project come to life right here in Erie County. The new stadium represents a long-term investment in our region, supporting local jobs and giving fans something to look forward to for years to come.
